Reflections on Individual and Team Coaching – A Journey with Cornwall National Landscape
Culmination of Three years coaching
Imagine an early summer day: the sun is shining. You are in a beautiful setting with a team of people you have been coaching individually for more than three years. The day marks a milestone in a journey you have been fortunate enough to share with them.
I experienced exactly that a few weeks ago when I joined the @CornwallNationalLandscape (https://cornwall-landscape.org/) senior team for their Away Day: a chance to reflect not only on each person’s individual coaching journey, but also on how that growth had shaped the team as a whole.
Setting
We spent the day at Trebah Garden (https://www.trebahgarden.co.uk/), followed by the Forest Garden (https://theforestgarden.co.uk/) in Budock Water, surrounded by nature. For this team, the setting mattered. Quiet, peaceful and energising environments create the space to step back from day-to-day pressures, focus on personal development and think more clearly about the challenges that matter most. Time in nature has a way of helping people separate the noise from what is truly important.
What makes a Great Leader?
I believe great leaders coach rather than command. They help people recognise their strengths, build confidence in their own judgement and make decisions with greater clarity. They create an environment where mistakes are not something to fear, but an essential part of learning. When individuals are coached well, they grow in self-awareness, resilience and capability — and those qualities naturally strengthen the wider team.
The benefits do not stop at the individual level. Coaching people within a team helps create a culture where support, challenge and shared responsibility become normal. Team members begin to think more independently, solve problems more confidently and contribute more openly. Leaders who coach well do not need to have all the answers; instead, they ask thoughtful questions, nvite different perspectives and listen carefully to what emerges.
What Does This Look Like?
One of my favourite ways to describe this is through the analogy of an orchestra. Each musician has the same piece of music, but is responsible for their own part. Their focus is on playing their instrument as well as they can, at the right moment and in harmony with everyone else. The conductor may not play every instrument, but their role is vital: to create the conditions for individuals to perform at their best so the whole group can succeed together. Coaching works in much the same way.
Every person in a team matters, but coaching the team collectively is just as important as coaching each individual. Team coaching helps people understand how they work together, where communication breaks down, what trust looks like in practice and how to align around shared goals. It turns a collection of capable individuals into a more connected, effective and productive team.
Working With Cornwall National Landscape
Working with the Cornwall National Landscapes team over a prolonged period has been deeply rewarding. There have been moments of deep reflection, moments of laughter and even a few tears — and throughout it all there has been learning, growth and development. That is one of the greatest privileges of coaching: being able to witness both individual transformation and the ripple effect it creates across a whole team.
What stood out most in this team was their passion, their motivation, their willingness to grow and their commitment to coming together more intentionally. That is the real benefit of coaching individuals in a team and coaching the team as a whole: people develop greater confidence and clarity, and the team develops stronger trust, better collaboration and a shared sense of purpose. When both happen together, the impact can be powerful and lasting.
